EXTREME COUPONING - WHAT A WASTE OF TIME!

I can't believe there is a show on TV called Extreme Couponing! Thankfully this is not possible in Canada, and I say thankfully, because I find it such a waste of time and energy. You need a big house to store all the stuff - which means more to clean and heat, and you get stuff you don't really need. And wouldn't 50 containers of mustard go bad before your family could consume it all?

I tend to think of this as organized 'hoarding'. It is an addiction and it serves no one any good to be buying things simply because there is a coupon. Not to mention so many of the things I see on this TV show being tossed into the carts is junk food.

I have personally chosen to not use coupons at all. I find it simplifies my life since I don't have to store, search and keep track of them. And most importantly, I just don't get coerced into buying things I may not really need. I might not save a few dollars a week, but I'm OK with that. I would rather take the extra time to make my own coffee at home and save the $2.00 I would spend at the coffee shop otherwise.

It's all a matter of choice. I choose to simplify when it comes to coupons. It makes me feel good, and isn't that what life's all about?

SPLIT A MEAL AT RESTAURANTS

Why does this simplify? Because it allows a normal sized portion of food so that you are not overeating. This makes it easier to consider going out more often, which is a nice luxury. Whether it is because of cost or because of calories, splitting makes sense. The bonus of eating out, of course, is that you go home to a clean kitchen... that's always my favourite part!

SIMPLE COUNTRY LIVING - 501 WAYS TO SIMPLIFY

I just picked up this book at Anthropologie, one of my favourite stores, and I love it! It is quite simple and basic, but it is written with such love and the ideas and photos are so perfectly me. It has 501 old-fashioned ideas to simplify your life. It touches on the home, the garden, clutter control, food and so much more. The book caught my eye as soon as I walked into the store as it had all the elements of me on it! Did you know I even collect milk bottles? How fitting!

Check it out on Amazon or at the amazing Anthropologie store. It will be a treat to just walk through the store for inspiration, and then you can open the pages of this book for a sneak peak.

LEAVE YOUR SHOES AT THE FRONT DOOR

Leaving your shoes at the front door is something a lot of people do here in Canada. It's simply because in the winter it is obvious to take off your boots, so it just spills over into the other seasons as well. But if you are the type that runs in with your shoes on in the summer, you may want to stop that habit. It will help you cut back on dirt, therefore less cleaning, and it will make your home feel just a little more special. There will be less stains, less wear and tear and it will feel just a little more like your own zen space, where shoes are just not allowed.

Do be sure to keep them nice and tidy at the front for a healthy visual... and in keeping with that overall zen thing.

STOP BUYING CLOTHES THAT NEED TO BE DRY-CLEANED OR IRONED

The title seems obvious in order to simplify, right? Well it is. To make this transition, start at the store. Before you even try on any clothes for purchase, read the label. If you really want to stop having to go to the dry cleaners and ironing, then don't even try clothes on that require either because if it looks good on you, you may be tempted to buy it! So to stick to this plan of simplification, stop the cycle right at the store level.

For what you already own, just get rid of those things that you say you will iron or have dry-cleaned... you know you never will if this is a goal of yours. And once it is gone, you'll only have things in your wardrobe you can look at and just put on! How relaxing!

I do recognize the need for a fine suit for men and perhaps that perfect little black dress for women - both of which may require dry-cleaning, but this is an everyday lifestyle change I am referring to. This is something my husband and I have already taken to it's extreme. My husband's pants and shirts are all iron-free, so hanging after washing is all it takes. As for me, I have gotten rid of my crinkly iron shirts and my own little black dress is actually washable in the machine!

Bonus - the chemicals used in dry-cleaning and electricity used in ironing are eliminated - eco-friendy too?... Check!

GET RID OF YOUR LAWN

Cutting, fertilizing, edging, and weeding your lawn are time consuming. Unless you have little kids that like to run around on the grass with shoes off playing tag or ball, you don't need grass. Without it, it can make your life so much easier. Not to mention that it is more environmentally friendly to have more native ground cover than grass. Here are a few great examples of what you can have and enjoy without the worry of mowing a lawn. Heavenly, right?

REDUCE THE CLUTTER IN YOUR LIFE

Let's face it, we all have too much stuff. This is part of the reason we all seem to think we need bigger houses! But do we really need all that stuff? To simplify, ask yourself this question every time you pick something up - "do I love it; do I need it"? If you can't answer yes to either, get rid of it.

It really can be as simple as that as you go at your first drawer, then the closet, then the garage, then the basement...

Keeping only what you truly need and love in the kitchen is a great place to start. There are no doubt some relics in yours like that awful mug a co-worker gave you or the mis-matched dishes set that is all chipped. Unless you use these things often, you really don't need them and you can't tell me you love them. Take cue from this perfectly organized kitchen cupboard that seems to have everything you would really need - just the right amount of glasses, dishes, mixing bowls and prep bowls. Why have more?

Everyone has an area they call their office these days. Whether it is the corner of your dining room table where you put your desktop computer; or a full room dedicated to all your personal and/or business needs. This is an area that often gets neglected because of all the paperwork, paperclips, pens... This little office in a cupboard is a great solution! It contains your stuff so you can't grow 'more stuff'. It really makes you consider only the things you truly need (or love, like those little blue vases).

Your clothing cupboard can no doubt use an overhaul too. This cupboard shows a very minimalist wardrobe, but I bet if you took everything out of your closet and only put back what you wear regularly, yours would look like this too. If not, it's time to re-think the amount of black pants you have, or how many sweaters you need in the same colour. Choose the ones that make you feel best when you wear them, and only those. Getting dressed in the morning will be so simple once you only have stuff you really truly love.

Your linen closet should only have what you use. How many extra towels do you really need for guests or cleaning up? And if you have changed your colour scheme, get rid of the old towels you know will now clash in the new space. As for sheets, keeping your two favourite for each bed is best - give the rest away.

Lastly, don't forget the big jobs like your basement storage and garage. These places tend to have your cast-offs. It should be pretty easy to rid yourself of the things in those places, but because you don't see it it is forgotten. So get to that when you have a chance and find the easiest way you can rid yourself of the things that can truly clutter your mind when you see them.

To summarize simply - Only keep what you need. Your life will truly feel richer.

MAKING THE NEW YEAR SIMPLER IN EVERY WAY

There are so many ways you can simplify your life for 2012, and forever. Here are just a few in point form - I'll elaborate in the new year on each point, and others if you have some to share too. You may like some and choose not to follow others, but if you commit to even just a few, you'll recognize the pleasure in living a simpler life.

reduce the clutter in your life
get rid of your lawn
stop buying clothes that need to be dry-cleaned or ironed
leave your shoes at the front door
run all your errands in one place
drive a simple car
move to a smaller home
change the way you shop
get rid of all but one of your credit cards
split a restaurant meal

Create a low maintenance garden with no grass to mow...

Instead of polish, buff your nails - it never chips and your hands will always look clean...

Take your boots off at the front door and only keep the pairs you are currently wearing there...

I hope in the new year you find simplicity in life, making you wonder why all the little changes you made weren't done long before.

RIBBED GLASS APOTHECARY JAR

This week when I was out shopping I came across what to me was a beautiful, and practical, apothecary jar for a mere $9.99. I knew when I saw it exactly what I was going to use it for - my cats' food. It would replace the old one so yes, I was going to recycle the old tin so as not to store another 'thing' in the house.

So practical was this to be - glass for easy cleaning and a screw top so that the odours stay nicely inside. And with it being so pretty, I could keep it on the counter, right near the cats' bowls so it would be easy to just reach in and take some out with the scoop at feeding times.

So what is the problem? My husband's hand doesn't fit very well into the jar mouth. He can still manage, but he's not happy, and for him, this is not more practical for this reason.

SO..., go back to the old or stick with the new? We are giving the new pretty one until the new year to give it a try. I have not as of yet gotten rid of the tired old tin the food used to be in, but once we decide...

I'll keep you posted, but my guess; I will win and the jar will stay.

CHANUKIAHS TO MAKE - BECAUSE ALMOST ANYTHING CAN BE USED TO RING IN THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

As long as there are 8 + 1 candles, you can arrange almost anything to make a Chanukiah to celebrate Chanukah. Here are some simple ideas for making your own if you don't happen to have one, or want to have more than one going at the same time. Such a nice tradition.

Use a row of mason jars - here are two examples - with fish tank rocks or without - do keep the middle one bigger, not smaller, to make it seem more 'real'.

I love this shot glass idea made with little glass beads. If you do this, be sure not to use plastic beads - they will melt when the candle burns down.

I love this one too, which is just lining up several single candlestick holders - note how the middle one should be taller than the other eight.

You can make use of so many things to use as a Chanukiah (Hannukiah). Consider drilling holes in a rock from outside - 8+1. Take your kids bead box and see if there are glass ones that will fit a small candle - line them up and glue two together for the middle one. Or simply take a plank of wood, drill holes, put some tin foil in each to look like a cup and you're ready.

LED LIGHT BULBS TO MAKE THINGS EASIER

If you have pot-lights, like I do, you know how hard it can be to get those light bulbs replaced when they burn out! As mine burn out, I have chosen to replace them with LEDs. They are very costly but are said to last for up to 25 years! Now that would certainly make things easier for me! And with the new technology of them, they are now dim-able too!! Brilliant!

There are so many to choose from, like this screw in kind, like the ones I personally have.

And ones with this type of connection, like I used to have in some of my track lighting. Plus, of course, many more, so there is now a bulb for virtually everything. And don't discard them if you hate fluorescent - there are many types of light emissions to choose from too.

The most important thing to remember is not how much you spend up front on these things, as they do cost exorbitantly more, but that they will save you money in the long run by saving energy. Not to mention that you won't have to constantly replace them!

SIMPLE EVERYDAY TRICKS FOR THE LITTLE THINGS IN LIFE - HUH!

Did you know you can use a walnut to rub out scuffs from wood? Go figure!

Did you drop something small on the floor like an earring? Put a stocking on the vacuum hose!

Yesterday I burnt my thumb - wish I had some of these in the freezer! That Aloe Vera gel you get in pharmacies? Freeze them in ice cubes then store in a baggy for soothing relief for any kind of burn. Especially handy in the summer beach months.

Brilliant - put the entire sheet set inside one of its pillow cases - neat and easy to find the whole set!

TRAVEL AND WHICH LUGGAGE TO BRING

It is really quite simple - get rid of all the luggage you have that you don't use anymore. Only keep the ones that are currently airport friendly. What does that mean? It means that no matter how full you make it, most carriers will accept its weight with no overcharges. If you think about those luggage sets that have the XL, medium and small pieces, get rid of the XL one. They will always go over in weight and you'll have to pay more, not to mention that you'll have to pull more too!

And while we're on the topic of luggage, don't forget that if you are travelling with someone else, put half of each of your clothes in each of your suitcases. That way if one luggage is lost at least you will both have some things you can change into until it is found.

So simple! Now just do it. The next time you put your things out for a charity to pick up, put it all into one of those luggage's you don't use anymore and tag it for removal. Done.

PS As in this photo, try rolling your clothes. It takes up way less space and if you only take that medium luggage, you'll need it.

MY KINDLE INSTEAD OF BOOKS

I always thought I was a purist when it came to reading and that I couldn't give up my books. I loved turning the pages, skimming ahead and behind for notes, quotes or turned down pages with inspirational notions... but then I got a Kindle. It was a mother's day gift from my family so I've had it for several months now. It all started after trying to read the biggest book I have ever taken to the tub with me, and it just didn't work! Epiphany - a kindle would solve that problem!

It took a while to get used to not turning pages and visually seeing the pages I read with pages to come at a glance. But alas, I was a convert. I loved that I could read with one hand to leave my other hand free for, ahem, a glass of wine. I loved taking it with me on holiday with more than one book in tow without the added weight. I love that no one ever knows what I'm reading, what page I'm on, or how far along in a book I am when I sit in the subway or while on holiday at the pool. And most of all, I love that my bookshelves are not getting more cluttered with books I tended to buy and not borrow.

I think I have simplified my life! With one easy button on the computer, I choose a book and a minute later I can start reading. That's simple! I don't have to worry about giving away, lending or getting back for re-reads a whole stack of books that tend to accumulate. That's simple! I love that if someone wants to buy me a book as a gift, they still can for my Kindle. That's simple! And with time, it will even pay itself off as the books tend to be slightly less expensive than paperbacks and I did tend to always buy.

I'm a happy Kindle owner. What are your thoughts on the Kindle or other e-Readers?

DO NOTHING

Yup, do nothing. Sounds odd and maybe even exhausting, but if you learn to do absolutely nothing you will hopefully realize how silly it is to be running all the time. Start with an hour, or even 10 minutes, and just sit. Don't read, don't watch TV, don't talk to friends, just do nothing. It's not meditation, it's simply being with your thoughts and learning to relax. How simple is that?

Work up to a longer periods of time and schedule it into your hectic lives - it really helps simplify your life and what could be more relaxing than that?

PS Learn from a cat - they do it best!!

FORGET CALL WAITING

It's a little thing but if you get rid of your call waiting, life can be simpler. If you still have a land line, like I do, and also a cell phone, like I do, then there really is no need for this nuisance of a feature. I really hate when I am on the phone with someone and in the middle of a thought they say 'oh excuse me, it's my other line'. It really makes me feel unimportant. And if you personally have this ridiculous feature, you are complicating your life by having the possibility of having to deal with two people at the same time.

If the second caller has something that important to say, they can leave a message or call your cell (and leave a message there too if need be). And really, how often is something so important that one can't wait to be called back?

Simplify your life by getting rid of call waiting - trust me, it's so worth it. And you'll save the expense too!*

*I do get this feature for business, but not for your personal life.

WHITE DINNERWARE DISHES

White dinnerware to me is always the perfect solution for your everyday basic set. I find the food you prepare always looks better on white dishes. And of course they are easy for stacking on open shelves as they always look neat since there is no pattern.

Boring? I like them layered with old dishes sets that you perhaps inherited or found at flea markets or garage sales for a once in a while lift. That's where you can have fun on the days you just don't feel like being too simple.

PREPARING A MEAL WITH WHAT'S IN THE HOUSE

On Wednesday my fridge broke... again! This time with no warranty left on it. So we decided it just wasn't worth it to save after so many years of problems (and it's only 7 years old!!). I found one, but until it is delivered we try to keep the fridge as cold as possible and have put the freezer stuff into the basement deep freeze.

So, it leaves me with stuff to use up in the fridge and I kind of like this feeling. It really makes me think creatively about what I have to use and to make it happen. Last night I used up a bunch of the cheeses, a zucchini that would not last another day without refrigeration, an opened bottle of pasta sauce and some leftover chicken from a couple of days prior... voila, a casserole was made. I added some spice, baked it for 40 minutes and it was a great meal that we all enjoyed. And it felt like it didn't cost a cent! I mean, it was all about to go bad anyway, right?

It's definitely something to think about when you want to clean out your fridge. How easy was that to make and it made it so practical that I didn't have to throw as much out, (or order in - an expense we don't need after just running out to buy a new fridge!).

UNLOADING YOUR DISHWASHER MADE EASY

I often handed the chore of unloading the dishwasher off to the kids because, well I hate doing it. Turns out to be a good thing because by watching them I actually learned a lot. You see, kids are lazy. They think in advance of doing. What they did was stack all the dishes, cups, containers, etc. on the counter in piles so that the dishwasher is fully unloaded, save the cutlery, and then they would transfer everything to the appropriate shelves. No back and forth... Brilliant!

And since this discovery, I have since simplified my inventory too. All my containers are now glass and stack easily, with lids in a separate drawer, and the dishes I use on a daily basis are all the same so they stack and fit perfectly exactly where they are supposed to fit. If you're asking, yes, my dishes are white... it helps keep things simple.

As for storage of your simple dishes and glasses, try some open shelves for those things you use daily. They won't get dusty if you use them all the time, and if they all match each other, it will look neat and pretty in the open. No cupboard doors to open and close so one less step in unloading too! Hmm, I don't have open shelves... yet!

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING SIMPLIFIED

My simplified Christmas shopping may only be useful for next year, but part of it may come in handy now. Start with a journal. Any kind really, but I like to suggest a pretty one that looks like a book that you can store on your shelves. Now mark down all the people you buy gifts for in list form. Then shop and write down what you buy.

OK, that's too simple. There's a trick to this and it's not about starting early. It's about starting late. Yes, late. Go shopping for non perishables the year before - like right after Christmas when all the sales are on! The key is to write down what you buy for whom though (the real reason for this pretty journal), and of course to have a big box in a dry place that you can store it all safely. It's easy to refer to the journal any time of year as you find appropriate gifts for those on your list.

That's it, that's the trick. You can work on it all year if you like, but for those special Christmasy things, it's best right after Christmas. It's naturally more economical too!

Up to date electronics for the kids do have to wait until last minute of course - can you imagine a teenager looking at a new Apple product... from a year ago!? They would think it archaic! ;)

**You may prefer to 'journal' on your computer of course. I just like the idea of looking at the list from year to year in a journal form.

BUYING FROM AND UNDERSTANDING FLOOR PLANS FOR SMALL SPACES

If you are in the market for a new small place and have started looking at floor plans, there are a few important things you should consider.

1. Most floor plans are flat and only 2D. I know, this is obvious, but if you really think about visualizing the space in 3D, it will feel very different. For one, you have to imagine yourself walking through the front door. Then imagine yourself going about your everyday activities in that space. You may think you can live small, but how small can you really live? It's different for everyone.

Take the above small space - the square footage was not listed, but it's tiny, agree? Now picture yourself coming in in the winter, let's say, with your boots and large puffy coat... you will be coming straight into the kitchen. No foyer to speak of. Can you do this? Can you downsize your wardrobe enough to allow that one tiny closet to hold your winter coat as well as all your other clothes? Where will you put your friend's coat when he or she comes over?

2. The above floor plan is a townhouse 2D floor plan. It looks nice and seems to fit everything you might need as they even show the ideal furniture placement (not sure where the inevitable TV goes mind you). But don't be fooled. Floor plans are designed to entice you to buy and to look bigger than it is. Those furnishings they have drawn in may not be scaled properly to the space. The sofa, for example may not be a full sized sofa. And the master bedroom bed looks like a double, not even a queen. Is that what you have and want to incorporate? If so, it may be the place, but be mindful of these tactics.

3. This kind of floor plan seems to give the best visuals. If the builder can't provide you with something like this, you can always go to a site such as this one to convert your 2D to 3D. But still be mindful of the furnishings and how it shows it all fits. Also remember to consider what you already own, the size of bed you prefer, and any other furnishings you hold dear and want to keep.

It's nice to buy new and have all the fun choices of finishes, but remember to really visualize not only how your furniture might fit, but how you like to live. Realize that the floor plans may not be scaled correctly, and if there are models to walk through, go there with your measuring tape - they often make the models slightly bigger than what they offer you.

If you remember to think carefully about your small space living, you won't be disappointed. Just take note that some builders do use the above strategies and that you should be aware.

**Not all builders use the above tactics of course, but it's good to be mindful.

I BOUGHT A SMALLER CAR AND IT'S AWESOME

Ok, real mini cooper drivers will say this isn't really small, but compared to my last car, it is small. And I love it! I love that when I am out shopping for clients or even for myself at places like Costco, that there is a limit. I can only load so much into the car. That makes it easy to say no to things, and if you have to go back for it, well, chances are you won't. To me this translates into less stuff, more creative thinking in what I buy, and less to unload and put away when I get home too.

Talk about an easy fix for simplifying your life! Just get a smaller car! Bonus: It helps on gas bills and the environment too!

CONSUMABLE GIFTS

I think the best gifts are consumable gifts. They are useful, pretty, thoughtful and environmentally friendly. And it`s the kind of gift your recipient doesn't have to worry about displaying... you know, like that sculpture you have to take out when that person comes over... and then if you forget - yikes! So inconvenient and wasteful!

With consumable gifts, consider what the person`s real tastes are. Coffee and tea are great for most - spoil them with extra special tea bags and specialty coffees with gorgeous packaging that you know they will appreciate. Cookies are always a treat for anyone and if they don`t like them, they simply share them with guests. And soy or beeswax candles are a gorgeous treat for anyone.

There is nothing to make space for, just stuff to enjoy - simply and easily. Consider that for your holiday giving!

SIMPLE DINNER FOR TONIGHT

I love Chatelaine for their triple tested, super easy meal ideas. Check out this hearty soup recipe from them here for one of my favourites! I like to use fresh coriander instead of dried for a more flavourful and colourful soup. And for spinach, if you have frozen cubes of it (from the freezer section by Arctic Gardens), that works amazing too.

A protein rich soup with a side salad is an amazing dinner idea that takes under 30 minutes to prepare. And all the ingredients are easy to find. This is my option for tonight!

PRACTICAL LIVING 101 - HERE IS WHERE IT ALL BEGINS

That's me in the front at the age of about 4 - I think I was either sucking my thumb or picking my nose. LOL! We had good times in our little abode.

Today I decided I wanted to share things other than just decor that I hold dear to me - everything simple and practical. My goal with this blog will be to help you think smarter to achieve a simpler and more practical life. I want to bring us back to an uncomplicated and easier way of living and thinking as I honestly believe it is the key to happiness.

I am continuing in this same blog that has many posts related to decor, but from now on it changes to all things practical, not just practical decorating. For decor stuff, visit my other blog here.

This photo is from a time where we all seemed to live quite well. By today's standards I wonder if we would still think so. I grew up in an 800 sq. ft. home that housed three children and two parents. There was one bathroom. And we were lucky as we had a lovely backyard where we grew vegetables in the summer and had our back deck for extra space for those few short warm months in Montreal, Quebec. I would say living that way was definitely simpler and more practical - there was less to clean, less to furnish, and way less space for 'stuff'.

The unfitted kitchen is not a look for everyone, but I love it! There is always character in an unfitted kitchen as there are unique pieces that act on their own while still relating to the overall effect. This kitchen has just that with it's chunky wood table acting as the island and only lower cabinets on the sink and stove side. And yes, there is a sink in the island with the pipes hidden by the basket - so clever!... did you notice that gorgeous wide winged chair in the forefront in sumptuous grey leather? Awesome!

There are so many ways to live 'green', and I mean that literally also. Green, as a colour, is gorgeous. It goes with everything and is always fresh... especially when paired with white. And 'living green' gets easier all the time with so many products so easily available now. Consider LED lighting for under your kitchen cabinets; recycled glass counters (move to the side please Granite); and organically grown hemp, cottons and linens for pillows, bedding and curtains.

It doesn't take much to carve out a space for yourself for a functional office. Remember to include all the little things you need but just as importantly, all the little things that you love! The pictures and paintings here are very personal and look like they inspire the owner of this space.

Just a word of caution though - this space is obviously staged - NO WIRES! If you can hide your wires, because there always are wires!, it is always best for the most serene look. For practical reasons, a cell phone might replace the nostalgic telephone (and then it would in fact be no wires!), and you can charge your laptop in a charging station elsewhere in the house, so this can in fact be real... but then there's that light fixture! ;)

Just stay real - some wires are ok - it's just reality... for now anyway.

Artwork is such a personal thing. It's always so hard when artists want to introduce me to their art so that I can use their pieces in upcoming clients homes. Because I don't know where the client will want to go or even how much they will want to spend! That said, there are a few that catch my eye and I think they are worth mentioning, at the very least in my blog. Jibola Fagbamiye is one of those artists. He is unique not only from others, but from piece to piece too. He is wonderfully talented! Can't you see this piece working in your Man-Cave, Den or even a Retro-vibe living room? The hardworking harvest table is one of the best tables in my opinion. It can be used for almost anything from a desk to a TV stand to a sofa table. Not to mention its appeal as a dining table of course. Picture it with Windsor chairs for a classic country look or for more whimsy, in a contemporary home with ghost chairs and a modern chandelier. It's really quite awesome! Everyone should have at least one somewhere in their home! ;)

I am on the search for a great B&B for a weekend getaway with my best friend. We're thinking of Niagara-on-the-Lake or Collingwood this summer. We try to do a trip away just the two of us every year, always staying at a B&B, switching it up from area to area. It's always nice to try something new and discover the uniqueness of each. Then it gives us a special place in time for each summer getaway. And of course, I also love poking around at the decor, and even peak into other rooms if the door is left ajar. But there is always one constant in our search - we only go for old houses. Nothing less than 100 years old. That's a feat for Ontario, but we always manage. And besides, wouldn't you say that a certain charm comes only from an old home with history? ...kind of a prerequisite for a B&B in my opinion! ;)

I love to recommend black walls in a white bathroom and most clients think I'm crazy! But here is proof, as seen in Apartment Therapy's home of Marsha and Javier, that it is not only completely classy and gorgeous, it really doesn't make a small space feel smaller. Just better! And how charming is this bathroom?!!

I love the way white linens can make even the most humble garden seem so wonderfully chic. The shabby and creative stuff comes in the old bottles hung on wire from tree tops. How clever. I'm going to use this in my garden... now I just have to find a linen table cloth with a darn hole in the middle... or get rid of the umbrella and I guess wait for the trees to grow in like in this photo! ;)

They also take up very little space! I love them... will be ordering mine soon and really hope my cats use them instead of my furniture! That's the whole point, right?

The pharmacy lamp is such a classic. I love the way it can transition into a very traditional setting or into a young hip modern space. It is the perfect task light. I really like them for a desk top too. The one here is from Pottery Barn.

This one is from Robert Abbey and has a more classic head to it.

These two, from JC Penney and LL Bean, are also great options.

Get one in the metal of your choice for a lamp that never goes out of style. I personally have a chrome one on my desk from Elte and it matches the chrome knobs on my white desk. It fits perfectly into my eclectic office space and I still love it!

I was at a client yesterday to help out with her home and was happy to discover she is an artist. Tori Smith, understood in her website here, is a lovely woman with a great talent. I was very impressed with her art and of course, because it's me, chose to show her white truck painting because, well you know, I like white.

I am into pink these days. Thankfully my house is all painted white so I can inject it in small ways. The other day I was at Crate & Barrel and bought 95 cent tea light holders in pink - what a wonderful little treat! It's just enough to inject this wonderful hue as it pulls from a painting I have that has all sorts of colours in it. And with a pillow I bought at Elte not long ago, it is all feeling oh so wonderfully rosy!

I found this gorgeous photo of a kitchen on someone's blog, but they didn't give credit to the person that designed it - wish they did because this is a small kitchen that rocks! It has all the wonderful elements of an up to date kitchen with rustic charm and definite longevity! I love the rustic floors to counter the smooth counters and white cabinets. I am not one for getting out there with the party goers, doing all that schmoozing and shoulder rubbing. But it is said to be good for business. It's hard work - well for me anyway. For some it comes by naturally.

This week I completely stepped out of my comfort zone to see what this schmoozing business could do for me. A while back I was invited to be in the audience of CityLine for a special show for only tweeters and bloggers. It was on Tuesday, the 22nd and will air next Tuesday, March 29 at 9am on City TV. We were asked to tweet during the show and were given the # (for those who tweet know) for the show. #clparty it was. While there I managed to 'schmooze' with some vivacious, bubbly outgoing women of whom a few I actually 'knew' from twitter and blogs. We ended the show with a swag bag of goodies and then got invited to The Ritz for lunch!

Well, how could I say no to The Ritz! It did mean I would have to do that 'schmooze' thing though. So I bravely walked over to a couple of ladies from Oakville that were looking for the subway and said 'let's go together - I know the way'. On the subway ride over from Dundas Square to The Ritz we connected. Bingo - that is what it's about, right? They do design, photography and cook so we had that in common. And following each other on twitter means we are privy to that many more events and get togethers where we can do more schmoozing, which I think turns into business eventually. You know, just knowing people.

When we got to the Ritz I continued to keep that smile on and talked to several other people, including the gorgeous Tracy Moore, seen in this photo with me.

Which takes me to the next social event I attended on my own this week. The official launch of Dabble magazine with editor Kimberley Seldon. It was held at Elte, a place I frequent often for shopping with my clients and a place that I've been to for other presentations. So I was not prepared for what this was - huge - over 1000 people! We got another # for the night #dabblemag it was.

I got there feeling a little under-dressed - stilettos and cocktail dresses seemed to be on most women. Luckily I braved my charcoal wide leg pants and a funky jacket instead of jeans and a sweater! I suppose I was the most comfortable in my shoes literally, but not figuratively. I picked up a martini on the way in but not having eaten very much before going I felt the booze three sips in and had to drive home, so I honed in on the food, put my drink down and just walked around seeing some familiar faces. I said hi to a few I had just met two days prior at CityLine, and then squeezed my way to the front awaiting the presentation by Kimberley. The music was loud so talking to anyone meant leaning in a la night club style - totally not my thing!

During the presentation I did see those two lovely ladies I had just talked with on the subway over to The Ritz so I talked with them a bit and after the presentation, grabbed another chicken skewer to make sure the alcohol was absorbed well (it totally was but it was an excuse for more food) and I left the scene.

Phew! I made it! It is totally out of my comfort zone to go out like that on my own and push my way into small talk conversations. But I did it and I think I feel proud of myself. Will I do it again? Probably. Doing something you are a little afraid of is healthy once in a while not only for the soul, but I'm guessing for business to. Will have to wait and see what comes of all of this other than a bunch of new twitter followers. And if nothing else, then a story can always come out of it. :)

commercial decorating - thoughtcorp

Residential decorating is quite different than commercial decorating. In residential the client means everything - they make the final decisions and they dictate where the mood goes, giving me the guidance to really help them make it theirs. SO satisfying! In commercial, while the client still dictates, it is a much wider appeal that needs to be considered. There are so many different opinions and ideas coming forth that need to be sifted through to come up with a plan that hopefully most will like.

I prefer residential. I get to be more creative and the satisfaction is more deeply felt by the client. BUT...

The past two months took me into a commercial space (company - thoughtcorp) that involved a move from a cool downtown heritage building office space, to a generic high-rise space further away. My request was to 'funkify' the space on a very limited budget. I knew what he meant so I had to perform magic! I spent over 75 hours on this project, of which maybe five were on design decisions - the rest was on logistics, dealing with so many different individuals, working with salespeople and the red tape of the office building - crazy! I thought I would pull my hair out and that this would only reinforce my preference for residential decorating.

But alas, I was pleasantly surprised!!! In the end I realized there really IS satisfaction in commercial projects. The end results pleased so many of the staff and I felt the wonderful camaraderie of a large group of people come together. Praise came my way tenfold and it couldn't have made me happier.

shabby chic painted stairs

There are so many stairways that are grand, split, curved or totally decadent, but hidden stairs behind a wall like this are just so cozy. And it just seems more appropriate to go up to your bedrooms on a staircase that is tucked away rather than always passing through a grand foyer.

I love the simplicity of the wall hanging and the little settee. Very sweet and completely balanced.

And of course you know I love the white details. Consider painting your stairs if they look too heavy. Here just the treads were left in natural wood, but you can paint it all, or paint just the spindles, stringers and risers leaving the rest wood.

Orange is my daughter's favourite colour. She's asked to have an orange room for as long as I can remember and now at almost 20 years old still loves the colour. And I get it! It's such a happy colour. You can't help but smile when you see orange, and its warmth adds the perfect glow to any space.

Ever since a visit to Prince Edward County several years ago, I was drawn to its quiet and charm and have gone back a few times. So now, after just selling a rental property that caused me grief, I'm seriously thinking of buying a 'cottage' in this area just for me! (well, for my family and friends too).

I searched the mls and found this ever so charming 100+ year old house with a yellow tin roof. I can hear the rain already. And all it needs is my own personal decorating touch.

I'll probably contemplate for way too long and it will be sold, but I believe things are meant to be so when the snow melts a little I will venture out there and have a closer look. If a yellow tin roofed house is supposed to be in my life, this little house will be waiting. And it won't be sorry.

A daybed is such a versatile piece of furniture. Consider it for its ability to do double duty - a sofa by day and a place to sleep by night. You might even consider a daybed as the perfect room divider - one that is open on both sides works wonderfully with pillows piled at the head and foot of the bed. Consider one for your office too, pushed up against a wall with tons of pillows. It will look and feel like a sofa but be ready in a pinch for an out of town guest.

A sisal rug is so versatile. It has become a staple in interior design over the years and I don't believe it will go away anytime soon. It is perfect for any design style and the texture adds so much to a room. Of course you can layer more sophisticated rugs over it too.

For a softer feel underfoot, consider a low loop-pile wool rug that has a similar look. Then pop an underpad underneath for the ultimate in comfort.

When I look at this house it reminds me of the house in the animated movie UP because of how it is situated amongst all those high-rises. It makes me smile.

Some may call this shabby chic - I just call it classic. Gorgeous and up to date with all the right textural elements to make this space, devoid of any strong colours, really work! The only thing I see wrong is the size of the picture to the left of the window - just a tad too big for the space.

This is my office. I know, it's busy and messy and crazily unmatched (but totally organized, just so you know). It is the only room in my house like this. It has black walls (the rest of my house is white), and it has pictures from ceiling to floor, or basically wherever I can put something. It is my room to showcase everything out in the open. And I love it!

But now it is time to paint. The walls just need it and behind all those pictures are tons of holes! So, should I go white, or stick with black? My inkling is to go with white. I have a month to decide before my painter can get here... and I'll need it because choosing the right white now is key! It's always so much harder for me than for my clients.
